Catherine Anne Davies aka The Anchoress returns with another beautiful sophisticated slice of dark pop in the shape of her new single ‘You And Only You’. The song which features Catherine’s velvety, narcotic vocals alongside Mansun‘s Paul Draper (who co-produced The Anchoress’s forthcoming debut album with Catherine) deals with themes of love and romance, or rather dismantles stereotypical notions of them. Catherine wrote this song on the guitar after an injury prevented her from playing the piano as she explains
“Originally it was something I’d written for my best friend, who had just come out of her first long-term relationship after enduring horrific brain surgery from a burst aneurysm. Lyrically, I guess it continues with the album’s dominant themes of deconstructing normative ideas of love and romance. No “baby, baby’s” here. This woman just basically wants you to leave her the fuck alone. There’s another duet version with a full string section that we recorded just before the one that you hear on the album. I said to Paul that we had to scrap it due to him sounding too much like Barry Gibb on the middle 8… Christ knows what I’m saying in French at the end. I don’t actually remember recording that due to an overabundance of Tramadol.”
The Anchoress’ debut album, Confessions of A Romance Novelist, is set for release on January 15th, 2016 via Kscope.
Catherine is currently on tour with Simple Minds, co-writing Paul Draper’s debut solo album and has begun working on her second album with Bernard Butler.
