Punk Slime Recordings ( PNKSLM) are good at this as they unearth yet another gem. ‘First Time’ by Hater unfolds with an unhurried sense of languid grace , whilst singer Caroline Landahl’s throaty yet fragile vocals add a sense of forlorn longing to proceedings. There’s a hint of a scuffed up, less polished Camera Obscura in their winsome, lilting melodies, and doubtless, they’ll be tagged as ‘ Scandie-jangle pop’ by some. However when music sounds this good and seems so natural and honest, genre tagging is rather like a broken pencil – utterly pointless.
Whilst there’s an unpolished charm to Hater’s still-nascent oeuvre it’s still a hugely impressive start, given they only formed in Malmö this year with Caroline being joined by Måns Leonartsson, Adam Agace and Lukas Thomasson. The debut EP Radius is out now via, as mentioned, Stockholm’s PNKSLM Recordings with the band set to head into the studio this summer to record the debut LP, which is due later this year.
