12 Songs Of Christmas – Day Eight
Dum Dum Girls/ Crocodiles “Merry Christmas Baby (Please Don’t Die).“
Over 12 (working) days, I’m suggesting 12 songs that probably don’t get the airplay they deserve this time of year and should be regarded as Christmas/Seasonal Classics
Back in 2009, cult indie bands Crocodiles and Dum Dum Girls released a song that drew on both artists’ strengths in the shape of “Merry Christmas Baby (Please Don’t Die).” It’s a classic garage pop song, and while the production is pretty lo-fi, it still pays homage to that classic, iconic “Wall of Sound” vibe but without the specter/spectre of guilt associated with knowing it was produced by a bewigged murderous lunatic.
Essentially, it’s a Christmas song the Ramones could have recorded, merged with a 60s girl group vibe. And it makes me realize how much I enjoyed Dee Dee (real name Kristin Gundred) and her Dum Dum Girls project, who now performs, DJs, and composes as Kristin Kontrol.
Merry Christmas, baby
Please don’t die
All I want this year
Is to see you smile
Underneath the mistletoe with me
Everybody’s singing merrily
