12 Songs Of Christmas – Day Eleven
Kathleen Edwards “It’s Christmastime (Let’s Just Survive)”
Over 12 (working) days, I’m suggesting 12 songs that probably don’t get the airplay they deserve this time of year and should be regarded as Christmas/Seasonal Classics.
And so after a break due to putting together this year’s podcast ( check it here ), it’s back at the 12 Songs of Christmas coal face today,This cracker comes from the brilliant Kathleen Edwards with “It’s Christmastime (Let’s Just Survive),” and always nice to see that the fine old tradition of Christmas song titles with brackets hasn’t been abandoned. It’s from 2019, and Edwards wanted to write a song that showed a more realistic, slightly more realistic version of Xmas. It’s not a Hallmark Christmas for everybody.
“I wrote ‘It’s Christmastime’ during the 2018 holidays,” she revealed. “It’s that time of the year where you click the radio, and there’s the standard Christmas fare. None of these are actually what Christmas is like. Christmas is a zoo. It’s chaos from start to finish. You spend too much. You expect too much. There’s always the drama of your dysfunctional family. I was like, ‘How come there are no songs about that?’”
And now there is. It’s acerbic but also warm and witty with some superb lines to savor.
“You have a meltdown when we play Scrabble
It’s not my fault, you’re always left with vowels
Auntie’ Sue goes on a really long walk
To buy weed from the swingers living down the block
And the cat pissed on the Christmas tree
And it soaks through the box of the iPad that you bought me
Is it too soon to ask
Did you get Apple Care with that”
