Australian quartet Body Type do it again! Their latest single, “Holding On,” from their forthcoming second LP, Expired Candy (out June 2 via Poison City Records), is another melodic, fuzzed-up slice of guitar rock. At the risk of being called a “bludger,” is it lazy to suggest it has a slight hint of Courtney Barnett about it? Perhaps, but the truth is that Body Type are currently producing some of the most engaging material of their career. “Holding On” is packed with riffs, melody, and harmonies, making it quite possibly my favourite Body Type track, well, this year at least, until the next one arrives.
In other news, they have also finally announced details of UK (and European) dates. – Ironically, I’m in Australia at the time. No actually, I jest, so I might actually finally catch them live in Manchester – Hurrah!
The track was written via shared voice memos passed back and forth across state borders, as Lead vocalist and guitarist Sophie McComish explains “’Holding On’ came from a particular time and space but it has evolved into a personal mantra of sorts. I’m a quadruple Virgo so I find it a challenge to relinquish control and embrace uncertainty. Sometimes the only thing that’ll get you through though is the passing of time, and it’s cool to just submit to that and trust that the outcome will be the right one.” Bassist Georgia Wilkinson-Derums expands on this, sharing that “This song is a product of writing at a distance. Just like that time ends up passing very discreetly until what you’re left with are quiet, hopeful memories that arm you for the future.”
