Brighton-based CIEL’s latest track, “So Scared,” arrives today (June 14th), ahead of their new EP titled “Make It Better,” set for release on July 7th via the revered indie label Jazz Life (Blood Red Shoes, Tigercub, Circe).
“So Scared” merges post-punk, new wave, and pulsating shoegaze, as frontwoman Michelle Hindriks skillfully switches between the imperious and the emotive with her soaring mellifluous vocals. It’s lush, cinematic, and insanely catchy.
Hindriks explained, “So Scared” is about being afraid to be vulnerable and open up to someone else. However, at the same time, it’s about actively wanting to change that part of yourself and working hard to be able to be vulnerable because it’s an important aspect of forming valuable connections with others. The song started with just one cute-sounding synth line with the vocal part over it, and in the studio, we kept adding layers of guitars to create a much bigger sound”.
Produced and mixed by Blood Red Shoes’ Steven Ansell, CIEL’s “So Scared” is out now via Jazz Life and available on all digital platforms.
