New York duo Ali Genevich and Jake Brooks aka Laveda released one of our favourite albums of 2020 in the shape of their deputy ‘What Happens After’.
They’ll follow up that release with a second album A Place You Grew Up In which is due for release next year and their latest single “Surprise “ gives a glimpse of what to expect. As ever the band hit the melodic sweet spot mixing shimmering guitars and Genevich’s mellifluous vocals to craft a beautiful layered shoegaze-tinged soundscape.
What hang on a minute Andy, is it “evocative yet wistful?” Well, of course, it f**king is, would I feature a song that isn’t?
Jake Brooks goes into the meaning behind the lyrics which he explains are “meant to juxtapose the happy sunshine feeling throughout the song. “Surprise” is about dealing with loneliness and loss in this modern age. The overall sound represents how bright and happy we present ourselves on social media. But in reality, everyone’s depressed and stressed over the rapidly devolving state of society.”
And Ali Genevich adds “Sonically, “Surprise” is the bright song on the new record. Lyrically it embodies a lot of my personal feelings that came after I graduated from college in the same year the pandemic hit. I couldn’t help but feel low for a while, and once I came out of my writer’s block everything I wrote had this big sad mood.”
