PARADISE – YELLOW EP
Paradise are something of a mini underground super group. Formed in a bar in Oslo when Marianne Faithfull and Longview’s guitarist Rob McVey and Madrugada’s vocalist Sivert Høyem bonded over a desire to reproduce the immediacy and explosive alchemy often found in live music, which they felt was lacking in the digital age. Enlisting the formidable talents of PJ Harvey’s legendary drummer and arranger Rob Ellis and the VPME’s good chum the fabulous Simone Butler (Primal Scream) on bass, Paradise was born.
The opening track ‘Goodbye 21st Century’, from their glorious debut EP Yellow is a full on driving rocker that explodes out of the traps to make an immediate and visceral connection with the listener. And while it’s directness is its strength this isn’t at the expense of subtlety. This is darkly intelligent music full of passion and verve. Tracks such as the soaring ‘Humiliation’ and the emotive ‘Crying’ alongside the dark squalling distorted dystopian soundscape of ‘Head Wound’ which has hints of the fire and brimstone of early Nick Cave all combine to demonstrate what an exciting proposition this new collective is. Yellow is certainly a beautiful way to open the doors to Paradise. :)
