Something for the Weekend: Recommendations – Must-See Videos, New Music, Playlist (W/E 16/08/2024)

If You Listen to Three Tracks This Weekend, Make It These

Hinds – “The Bed, The Room, The Rain and You”

Hinds, (header Picture) the Madrid-based band, who continue to prove that less is more are gearing up to release their new album, VIVA HINDS, on September 6 via Lucky Number. As a final sneak peek, they’ve just shared a self-directed video for “The Bed, The Room, The Rain and You,” the only track on the album sung in both English and Spanish. This release marks a new chapter for the band, now back to its original duo format with founders Carlotta Cosials and Ana Perrote, following the departure of their bandmates Ade Martin and Amber Grimbergen last year.

Talking about the new album, Cosials describes it as a heartfelt reflection of their experiences, made without trying to fit into any specific mold. Despite the ups and downs, including the pandemic and lineup changes, the bond between Cosials and Perrote has remained unshakeable, fueling their passion for making music together. VIVA HINDS also features previously released tracks like “Boom Boom Back,” a collaboration with Beck, and their first Spanish-language single, “En Forma,” showcasing the duo’s continued evolution and creative spirit.

W.H. Lung – “The Painting of the Bay”

Manchester-based synth-pop band W.H. Lung, indisputably one of the most exciting and engaging live acts in the UK, is set to release their third album, Every Inch of Earth Pulsates. Known for their electrifying performances and frontman Joseph Evans’s frenetic energy, they captivate audiences like few others. To capture that live intensity on record, the band relocated to Sheffield to work with producer Ross Orton (MIA, Arctic Monkeys). Evans describes Orton as the “Sheffield Steve Albini,” someone who knew exactly how to channel their raw energy into the recording process.

The album blends dance, pop, and indie with a newfound directness, showcased by their latest single, “The Painting of the Bay.” This bold, electronic track emerged from a moment of deep personal reflection. Evans recalls, “On the day this song was written, I was hurting and went to a gallery to find some peace. I stood in front of a painting by Cezanne called ‘The Bay of Marseilles.’ I love this painting, but I just felt nothing, which made me feel worse. When I got home, I found Tom had sent me an idea he’d done on the acoustic, and the whole song took shape—I think I wrote it standing in the kitchen.”

Katy J Pearson – “Maybe”

Katy J Pearson’s new single “Maybe” is a reflective pop track that offers a glimpse into her forthcoming album, Someday, Now, arriving on 20th September via Heavenly Recordings. Katy had a fresh perspective while collaborating with Huw Evans (H. Hawkline), exploring themes of self-assurance and empowerment. The music video for “Maybe,” directed by Edie Lawrence, features an archery competition, celebrating female strength and equality. Highlighting the work of a largely female crew, the video reinforces the message of women supporting each other in creative spaces.
