Ada Lea is the musical moniker of Montreal visual artist and singer-songwriter Alexandra Levy. “damn” is the latest track to emerge from her forthcoming second album one hand on the steering wheel the other sewing a garden which is out on 24th September.
“damn” is a smoky slow burner and it’s also the albums opening track. It’s an incredible album and one that’s imbued with a genuinely timeless quality. Timeless in a Joni Mitchell Cat Power kind of way, without particularly sounding like either. But Levy posses that same depth of emotional intelligence, and an innate ability to spin narratives that quickly beguile the listener. She also has the musical artistry to succinctly capture emotion in verse and melody in a way that only the truly great artists can. The album is divided evenly into four seasons with the opener “damn” belonging to winter as one year ends and other begins with a narrative about the unfolding events at an accursed New Years’ Eve Party (is there any other type?)
