Circa Waves return with not one but two new tunes, our new contributor Megan Walder finds herself experiencing a headphone moment or two as she delves into the bands new material
It’s been over a year and a half since Circa Waves released their second album, ‘ Different Creatures’ but they are back to grace our ears once more with a new single, ‘Movies.’ It’s arrived hand in hand with another brand new track ‘Be Somebody Good.’ And having recently revealed details of their brand new studio album ‘What’s It Like Over There?’ these two new tunes form the start of the musical breadcrumb trail leading to the announcement of their 2019 tour, with tickets going on sale 7th December.
‘Movies’ displays a refined, grown-up version of pop. Layered and cinematic, this song is beautiful to listen to when having an antisocial moment on public transport. Earphones in, staring out into the distance and imagining what could be. The song itself appears to be an ode to this exact moment, a beautiful separation from reality, the realistic yet unobtainable nature of movies, and the perfect moments in your life that leave you thinking ‘wow’.
The B-side, ‘Be Somebody Good’ takes off from a more relaxed starting point and builds to an incredible chorus, with a drum beat that screams power and intensity. The highs and lows of the song mirror the central theme of the song the inner battle when prioritising yourself over a relationship. The song reflects on a more negative movie scene of the morning after the night before, ‘didn’t know you then until I found a note that said…’. Paired with ‘Movies’, this song seems to be a musical ‘not everything is perfect’, and maybe that’s why the cynical millennial in me gravitates towards this song. Life isn’t perfect and Circa Waves acknowledge that.
I can’t wait to catch these guys in 2019.
