We know that new music bloggers can get pretty excited about new artists on a regular basis, so be warned this post contains graphic scenes of serious full-on ‘gushing.’But it’s hard not to get excited when you come across a band as special as Toronto’s Dilly Dally.
Singer and guitarist Katie Monks and guitarist Liz Ball met in high school and immediately became inseparable friends bonding over a shared love of artists such as The Pixies, Kurt Cobain, and Christopher Owens. “We started a band because we believed in ourselves,” says Monks, “and we believed in Music—almost like it was a religion!” After a revolving door policy over a number of years Ball and Monks finally found a stable line-up in the shape of Benjamin Reinhartz on drums and Jimmy Tony on bass. Dilly Dally’s debut album Sore arrives on 9th October 2015 via Partisan Records and to be candid, and for the avoidance of doubt, it is an absolutely f***ing magnificent debut, drawing on pretty much everything we think makes for great music.
Today’s Track Of the Day ‘Purple Rage’ is the second track to be taken from the album. It encapsulates the visceral power of the band allied to soaring pop hooks whilst Katie Monks magnificently malevolent throat shredding nettle sting roar is a thing of infinite wonder. So raw and powerful in a fact that it makes Courtney Love sound about as threatening and vital as Lana Del Rey on ketamine.
Confirming John Lydon’s assertion that “anger is an energy” Monks describes the thinking behind ‘Purple Rage’ thus “Anger is such a powerful emotion. This song is meant to be an anthem for channeling all the rage we have into something positive. When I have been badly hurt in the past, I am usually filled with a huge amount of energy. I always try to use that energy to make myself ‘stronger’ and ‘tougher.’ For me, that has meant working harder on the band plus my art shit, quitting cigarettes cold turkey after being a pack a day smoker, dying my hair weird colors, investing more energy into my friends … all kinds of stuff. It’s kinda like you become a superhero version of yourself…and no one can fuck with you.”
