Track Of The Day – Pumarosa – Fall Apart

Weirdly I was only wondering what Pumarosa had been up too after listening to their Piano Sessions Ep which came out in the wake of their brilliant debut album ‘The Witch’ in 2017. Quite a lot has been going on , both personally and professionally. All of which will have a huge impact on their new material. On the actual week, ‘The Witch’ was released, to critical acclaim the band’s lead singer Isabel Muñoz-Newsome was diagnosed with cervical cancer, requiring surgery and time to physically recoup and emotionally process what had happened. She told the Guardian last year –
At a time when everything should have been pure magic and everyone was happy and congratulating us, I was so angry. It was surreal. Doing the Jools Holland show and all that stuff, I just thought: ‘What the fuck am I doing here?”

The band’s bassist Henry also left the group which pushed the band to explore and expand their sonic soundscape further.

The band took their work to producer John Congleton in LA, whose production on the likes of St Vincent and Swans helped convince them he could bring these songs and life-changing experiences into existence. They were joined in the album recording by Tool’s Justin Chancellor who, become a fan of the band via their debut album.

The first track to emerge ‘Fall Apart’ from their forthcoming second album, ‘Devastation’ sees Pumarosa expanding into a more synth-driven sound, which given the backdrop to the writing of the music sounds suitably turbulent, urgent and expansive. It’s the sound of a band pushing themselves to the next level, transforming driven by circumstance experience and ambition but fuelled with hope and a sense of renewal. The album promises to explore questions of mortality and the pain of love while revelling in sexuality: what it feels like to ‘Fall Apart’, what it takes to carry on, and what it means to be alive
