Today’s tune , “Magpie Heart” is from She Makes War’s second album “Little Battles” ( the song is also graphically represented on the albums rather marvellous artwork) It’s a track that begins as a gently brooding acoustic number but quickly builds into something more sinister, “Sick of the sight of me today/ This Magpie heart will make me pay/Your beautiful face is leaving/Your beautiful smile receding” ” A desperate plea to a fickle lover ? A bitter admonishment and dissection of their capricious heart? Possibly, but whatever the meaning it’s a tightly coiled musical tour de force which has almost as many twists and turns as “The Usual Suspects” and has more than whet our appetites for the new album.
If you’re not yet acquainted with She Makes War, it is in fact the “gloom-pop” solo project of multi instrumentalist and visual artist Laura Kidd. Laura has toured the world playing bass with the likes of Tricky, The Young Punx and even A-Ha and in 2010 she released her critically acclaimed D.I.Y. début album “Disarm.”
She has also appeared on panels discussing digital DIY, the live music industry, punk and politics and artist development and has given lectures and seminars on portfolio working and social media for musicians at music colleges around the UK. Her new digital DIY collective My Big Sister will launch in the summer with a series of podcasts
“Little Battles” is available over at Laura’s bandcamp page round about. . . now! It comes in a variety of shapes and sizes from download only to special editions.
