It may be Thursday today, but there’s still time for some Wednesday. The Ashville based band are back with a new single “Chosen To Deserve” from their forthcoming album Rat Saw God ( the title seemingly taken from a 2005 Veronica Mars episode ) which is out on 7th April via Dead Ocean. The band’s sound which has been described as “Southern Shoegaze” really came into its own on 2021’s Twin Plagues ( read my review here) with Karly Hartzman, the songwriter/vocalist/guitarist at the helm of the project proving herself to be a consumate storyteller addressing the minutiae of small-town life with raw honesty and emotional intelligence. “Chosen To Deserve” continues in that vein with Harztman addressing her experiences as she explains the song began life as “ a writing exercise I gave myself to try to recreate the iconic song by Drive-By Truckers “Let There Be Rock” but with my own experiences from growing up and fucking around and getting into stupid shit.”
“The video directed by Spencer Kelly” Hartzamn continues ” shows the setting of my upbringing and antics: my parents’ neighborhood in Greensboro, NC and Lake Myers RV Resort.”
