When we are asked what style of music we prefer, we often respond along the lines of- ‘we like all kinds, there is no “one style.” This seems to annoy people, often sending them into a state of puce-faced apoplexy… it seems they interpret this as a vaguely smug position to adopt. They are however perfectly comfortable with us enjoying a variety of different cheeses (for example) but when it comes to music, we apparently aren’t ‘proper fans’ unless we stick to one flavour … music fans can be a very odd bunch.
However if you put a gun to our head we’d probably say that Minor Victories recent tune “Scattered Ashes (Song For Richard)” was pretty much a nail on the head track for us. It’s dramatic, inspiring, cinematic, heroic and bittersweet and features Rachel Goswell. Done deal then ….it also combines Rachel’s vocals with James Graham of the Twilight Sad, not a combination we’d have thought would work on paper. This is probably why we write arrant nonsense on the internet whilst musicians carry on with making music because, in fact , the vocals compliment each other perfectly. The video also features the ultimate cat fight, as an evil marauding kitty (who probably sits in a swivel chair stroking a tiny Donald Pleasance during their down time) and an empathetic pussy ( now, that’s a band name!) do battle , and human kinds fate hangs in the balance. It certainly gave us paws for thought… ahem..
Minor Victories are Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite, Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell, Editors’ Justin Lockey and his brother James and their self-titled debut album is released this summer. Remarkably all four band members never even all been in the same room together until after the album was completed, instead, they exchanged ideas, songs, fragments and finished recordings via broadband connections. The results thus far have been staggeringly beautiful.
